How Heavy Are These Chains

What do you say, when your heart is breaking for hearts broken in ways you could never imagine? And why would you try, when you know that your words could never make it right?

Something big has happened, and is happening, and will be happening for days and months and years to come, in Ferguson and everywhere, and it is not about me. I know that. But I am trying to be a witness to the pain and anger and frustration, and I cannot help but be changed by it. I wish I had the words. I don’t.

It’s music that strings it all together into something beautiful and moves them forward, toward something that might, someday, make sense. At least it might make sense of me. Here are the songs I’m singing. I hope they help you, too.

“Song for Michael Brown,” Peter Mulvey

“How Long,” The Soil and the Sun
