Party Like It’s 1999

No amount of money in the world could make me want to be 13 again. I didn’t have particularly rough teenage years but at this point I’m far enough removed from them to realize how happy I am to be through them.

I also had the “privilege” of being 13 in 1999. A mythical time before 9/11, before ubiquitous cell phones and texting, before skinny jeans and YouTube. This 10-minute video compiles the most ubiquitous pop culture from 1999 for an epic trip down memory lane that will make you feel like you are exactly 13 again…or however old you were in 1999. And you will most likely be horrified by many of the songs that were chart-topping hits on the cusp of the millennium. Seriously, America? “Mambo Number Five”?

As much as I’d like to think culture has improved since the low point of 1999, I can’t imagine a 2013 version will look much better, 14 years down the road. Justin Bieber, dubstep, Gangnam Style, viral videos, memes, Two and a Half Men. But I’ll have to wait until I’m 40 (!!) to have that kind of perspective. Until then, I can look back at the songs and movies and cultural forces that, like it or not, shaped my adolescence and will always be a part of me.

Remember…1999.
